Supporting Literacy Development in Early Childhood

Did you know…?

90% of brain growth happens before kindergarten. Incredibly, it doubles in size in the first year. It keeps growing to about 80% of adult size by age 3 and 90% – nearly full grown – by age 5. That is one of the reasons the Literacy Initiative focuses heavily on children from birth through five years of age.

During the 2022-2023 school year, the Initiative provided 34 scholarships for children to attend high quality early education programs at the Heritage Learning Academy and the Westabou Montessori School. These children all live in our focus communities of Harrisburg, Laney Walker, and the East Boundary area.

In 2023-2024 we will be increasing the number of scholarships to include children to attend the YMCA’s Child Development Academy on Walton Way.

While qualified distributions can’t go to your personal Donor Advised Funds, they can support initiatives like this one. If you would like to join us in improving literacy, click here to donate.
