Unrestricted Grant Recipients - 2002

The Community Foundation for the Central Savannah River Area announces their 2002 Grant Recipients.

On December 9, 2002 the Board of Directors of The Community Foundation, Inc. approved the award of 23 grants totaling $200,000.00 to deserving area agencies that are meeting pressing community needs, and improving the quality of life for the individuals they serve. These distributions are from the Foundation's Unrestricted Fund, which is supported by the Masters Tournament Fund, established by the Augusta National, Inc. Unrestricted Funds are funds which the donors place no restrictions on how they are to be used, giving the Foundation the greatest flexibility in making grants to address the community's most pressing needs.

The 2002 award recipients are:

Aiken County Chapter of the American Red Cross
A $7,000.00 grant to upgrade, enhance and expand their communications and IT System to ensure internal and external communications for the Red Cross Service Delivery Area (SDA) comprised of Aiken and Edgefield counties.

Aiken Technical College Foundation, Inc.
A $14,000.00 grant to assist in equipping the Medical Assistant and Phlebotomy Lab in the Health & Science Building, specifically exam tables and accessories, medical assisting instruments, and computer equipment.

American Red Cross of Augusta
A $9,580.00 grant to aid the "Save a Life" county outreach project in Burke and McDuffie Counties. Specifically disaster relief account support, and CPR/AED training and disaster training for 50 participants in the two counties.

Augusta Child Advocates
A $7,200.00 grant to assist in increasing their services to include reunification efforts in the form of supervised visitations, parenting classes, and child and family enrichment programs, and the Saturday Enrichment Program.

Augusta Training Shop for the Handicapped, Inc.
A $6,680.00 grant to expand their training and services program with the purchase of building and restoration tools, and lawn maintenance tools, allowing them to offer more services to customers, while providing clients the opportunity to work with more intricate repairs and extensive work orders.

Ben & Keeter's Puppets, Inc.
A $10,000.00 grant to work in collaboration with Gracewood Puppeteers to present puppet programs to the CSRA school population that will impact their understanding and acceptance of the disabled population. Specifically, to train client puppeteers and staff, build new puppets, and assist in their performances.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Augusta, Inc.
A $10,000.00 grant to assist in providing post-secondary education and work opportunities to low-income, high-risk youth in the Augusta and Thomson area. Specifically, for their Project AIM, and Goals for Graduation and Job Ready programs.

Central Savannah River Girl Scout Council
A $4,798.40 grant to support the implementation of the "Zink the Zebra" program in Edgefield, McDuffie and Burke Counties. This program helps girls develop the life skills of understanding, respect, compassion and acceptance of people with actual or perceived differences.

Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness
A $5,477.56 grant to assist the Speakers' Bureau Program, which informs the public about the many benefits to their lives through nuclear technologies, including medicine, food irradiation, and emission free electricity, as well as to inform young people about the many career opportunities within the nuclear technology field.

Communities in Schools of Burke County, Inc.
A $10,000.00 grant to connect at-risk students living in outlying areas of Burke County with after-school tutoring, and recreational and summer enrichment opportunities, by establishing community based programs for these underserved areas.

CSRA Humane Society
A $5,000.00 grant to assist in providing significantly reduced cost in spay/neuter assistance to people adopting pets from local animal control facilities, lower-income people who provide proof of income, and people who have rescued stray animals and will keep them as personal pets.

Golden Harvest Food Bank
A $12,000.00 grant to assist in feeding school-aged children in Richmond, Columbia and Aiken counties through the "Kids Cafes". The program offers a hot, nutritious supper during the school year, as well as tutoring and homework help.

Historic Augusta, Inc.
A $1,810.00 grant to support the "Box City Program" to be conducted in local schools. This program allows students to "construct" a city of their own, and become leaders in the community. The goal of the program is to promote cooperative learning, critical thinking, and to help mold responsible citizens.

Interfaith Hospitality Network, Inc.
A $14,000.00 grant to extend cost-free childcare to homeless families being served by other agencies, in order for parents to be able to spend daytime hours seeking employment and/or housing, and to assist in supporting the Children's Day Shelter program.

Junior Achievement of Georgia, Augusta District
A $10,000.00 grant to purchase program material for 100 classrooms to teach students at all levels about the United States economic system, and real world business lessons. This program plans to target 5,000 students in 2003.

North Augusta 2000, Inc.
A $10,000.00 grant to aid in funding the "Reading Readiness Program" to increase reading readiness by not less than 50% in four and five-year-old kindergarten students, based on public school readiness exam scores.

Rape Crisis & Sexual Assault Services/UHS, Inc.
A $10,000.00 grant to develop a coordinated effort among health providers, law enforcement, prosecutors, and victim advocates, to ensure victims of sexual assault receive efficient and comprehensive medical care, evidentiary examinations, and referral information.

Salvation Army
A $6,673.25 grant to purchase three sets of commercial washers and dryers for operation in the emergency homeless shelter, thereby maintaining sanitary living conditions, saving on water and utility costs, and eliminating the long-term costs associated with repairing worn machines and replacing linens.

Silver Bluff Audubon Center & Sanctuary
A $5,000.00 grant to assist in the development and implementation of field science opportunities that will connect students to nature by offering high quality, site-based, integrated science and natural history education programs at the Silver Bluff Audubon Center.

South Carolina Soil & Water Conservation Society
A $2,500.00 grant to organize, publicize and conduct a series of public education workshops in Richmond, Columbia, Aiken and Edgefield counties on how individuals can and should make a difference for water quality. Sessions include commons sense, non-technical information on how to manage pollutants on their properties, and conservation efforts.

University Health Care Foundation, Inc.
A $14,280.79 grant to aid in bringing the mobile mammography unit, which helps reduce breast cancer morbidity and mortality, to the CSRA. The grant will be used to purchase an on-board processing unit that will ensure each patient a good x-ray film before they leave the vehicle.

Walton Rehabilitation Hospital
A $14,000.00 grant to help build a greenhouse to serve as Phase I of the "Walton West Return to Work Project" for individuals with brain injury. In Phase II of the program, clients will work in the greenhouse, or participate in the sale of the greenhouse items, thereby easing them back into the workforce.

Youth Challenge Academy
A $10,000.00 grant to facilitate the automation of four General Education Development (GED) classrooms with computer equipment. This program serves targeted at-risk youths, which determines whether life skills and employment potential of high school dropouts could be significantly improved through military based training.
