The Community Foundation for the Central Savannah River Area Announces the 2006 Unrestricted Grant Award Recipients

On December 4, 2006, the Board of Directors of The Community Foundation for the Central Savannah River Area approved the awarding of 25 grants totaling $334,097.75 to deserving area agencies. These agencies are meeting pressing and changing community needs, and are improving the quality of life for the individuals they serve. These distributions come from the Foundation’s Unrestricted Fund, which is primarily supported by the Augusta National Golf Club. Donations to the Foundation’s Unrestricted Fund have no restrictions as to how they are to be used. The Foundation feels very fortunate to have donors give to the Unrestricted Fund. These funds give the Foundation the greatest flexibility in making grants to address the most pressing needs in the contiguous counties of Richmond, Columbia, Burke, McDuffie, Aiken and Edgefield. The Foundation uses a spending rule formula that ensures that the Unrestricted Grants Program will continue for years to come.

This years program brought eleven community volunteer panels of over 70 area leaders. These volunteer panels assisted the Foundation in the review & analysis of the applications and in the award recommendations. The Community Foundation is also pleased to announce that these grants are in addition to the Foundation’s individual Donor Advised Grants. Since The Community Foundation opened its doors in 1995, it has made 1,989 Donor Advised Grants totaling $11,686,893.23. The 2006 Unrestricted Grants will bring the total number of Unrestricted Grants to 214 totaling $2,114,662.39. This brings the grand total of all grants combined since 1995 to 2,203 totaling an astounding $13,801,555.62!

The 2006 Unrestricted Fund grant award recipients are as follows:

Action Ministries, Inc. dba Augusta Urban Ministries
A $15,000.00 grant to purchase a new box truck for the Furniture Bank, which would be used daily to pick up and deliver donated furniture and appliances that are given free of charge to clients who are establishing new homes after unfortunate circumstances.

Aiken Boxing Club / Aiken Youth Development Center P.A.L.
A $12,200.00 grant to provide professional services, supplies and equipment needed to fund The Learning Center's Career Preparation and Job Readiness program, which focuses on developing the interpersonal effectiveness in students.

Alzheimer's Association Georgia Chapter - Augusta Regional Office
A $15,000.00 grant to provide training workshops for families and professional caregivers, which include an overview of the Alzheimer disease, communication and caregiver strategies with activities of daily living, dealing with challenging behaviors and coping with stress, and also to provide financial assistance to qualified families for respite care, either in home or in adult day care.

Area Churches Together Serving (ACTS)
A $10,000.00 grant to provide food to dislocated workers, enabling them to improve their condition and recover from their unfortunate job loss.

The Art Factory, Inc.
A $7,000.00 grant to provide visual arts instruction to approximately 120 fifth grade students, which will include academic and artistic curricula focusing on design & sculpture, the environment, recycling and the art of collaboration to create outdoor sculptures to be installed in Augusta's first Children's Sculpture Garden at Pendleton King Park.

Augusta Canal Authority
A $14,472.50 grant to create and begin implementation of school enrichment programs allowing students to learn about the Post-Reconstruction Southern history and the ecology of the Piedmont Fall Line while meeting Georgia and South Carolina education standards.

Augusta Choral Society, Inc.
A $3,600.00 grant to purchase additional legs of various heights for existing platforms and to purchase smaller platforms to accommodate conductors and soloists so that more local organizations may be able to perform using them.

Augusta Mini Theatre, Inc.
A $15,000.00 grant to provide tuition assistance to 15 financially challenged students wishing to enroll in the instructional program; the tuition fee will be used to pay for expenses including costumes, props, scripts, books, and more.

Augusta Museum of History
A $15,000.00 grant to enhance the permanent exhibition, Augusta Story, to more effectively fulfill the museum's mission for the new millennium.

Augusta Opera
A $14,000.00 grant for the production of the Outreach Program, which will bring opera to underserved CSRA audiences through a series of free site-based performances aimed at students, multi-heritage groups, minorities, the elderly, and the mentally & physically challenged.

Augusta Restoration Shop (formerly Augusta Training Shop for the Handicapped, Inc.)
A $15,000.00 grant to purchase an open-face filter paint booth which will provide a cleaner painting environment for a better quality finish and a superior working environment for mentally challenged employees with the possibility of increased productivity.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Augusta, Inc.
A $15,000.00 grant to provide cultural enrichment and fine arts education to at-risk youth in Thomson to promote the development of positive life skills.

Care Pregnancy Center
A $15,000.00 grant to enhance the "Adopt-a-Mommy Program," where friendship, encouragement and support is offered to new mothers and mothers-to-be in a crisis, allowing the mother and baby to benefit and become better contributors of the community.

Child Enrichment, Inc.
A $15,000.00 grant to continue providing counseling, advocacy and forensic interview services for sexually abused children in the CSRA.

The Family Y
A $14,725.25 grant to purchase supplies, train staff and implement Y KidzFit, a fitness and nutrition program in five "Prime Time" after-school sites.

First Baptist Church of Waynesboro dba Center for New Beginnings
A $15,000.00 grant to provide "shadowing" services, which will allow an adult to attend a childcare facility with the child while helping to teach the child and the teacher strategies for successful participation with peers and to provide direct tutoring services, which will involve intensive one-on-one educational and behavioral instruction.

Friends of the Court, Inc.
A $15,000.00 grant to help fund the Burke County DUI/Drug Court Program, a program confronting the substance abuse issue underlying the repetitive patterns of habitual offenders.

Kids Restart, Inc.
A $15,000.00 grant for funding utilities, client transportation, supplies and salaries associated with supervised visitations, parenting classes, and family enrichment activities.

Lynndale, Inc.
A $15,000.00 grant to employ an additional objectives trainer who will work one-on-one with developmentally disabled people at the job site training them to perfect their challenging work related tasks.

MACH Academy, Inc.
A $15,000.00 grant to implement the "Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds" project at Fleming Tennis Center, which will impact students and parents and aims to support and encourage the academic, social, and personal growth of disadvantaged and underserved youth by inspiring them to find areas of physical activity.

Miracle Making Ministries, Inc.
A $15,000.00 grant to assist with the provision of non-medical patient support services to include prescription assistance through pharmaceutical companies, distribution of diabetic supplies and the availability of health education material.

The Salvation Army of Augusta
A $15,000.00 grant for the programming and expansion costs of "Enterprise Team," a skills training program teaching skills needed to facilitate a re-entry into society after homelessness involving multiple local non-profit partners providing employment opportunities for graduates of "Enterprise Team."

Southeastern Natural Sciences Academy, Inc.
A $15,000.00 grant to develop the scope of work associated with the Rivers at Risksm program, which will be applicable to other river communities as it builds on the education and outreach aspects of the Savannah River, and also to build a prototype of the living watershed, a cornerstone of the Rivers at Risksm program.

University Health Care Foundation, Inc.
An $8,100.00 grant to provide at least 1,000 prostate screenings to men in the CSRA in collaboration with the Aiken Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, who will promote the event in the African-American communities and with area Lowes' Stores, who will host the prostate screening awareness tests.

Wimberly House Ministries, Inc.
A $10,000.00 grant to continue providing an after-school program and a summer camp program to address the need for supervised enrichment activities for youth during times when they are most vulnerable to "at risk" behavior.

The Community Foundation’s unrestricted grant making focuses on Arts/Cultural; Civic Affairs; Community Development; Education; Environmental Services; Human Services; Health; and Children/Youth/Family Services.
